Make Your Own Ragù (Italian Meat Sauce)

Published on March 15, 2014 in All Recipes, Main Dishes.

The true meaning of ragú is meat sauce, and it is traditionally a dish from Northern Italy. Around our parts, the word “ragú” is ubiquitous with standard grocery store pasta sauce that in my opinion has little character.

And your dinner deserves character. Please and thank you.

Skip the endless rows of store-bought pasta sauce. Give this ragú recipe a try. I’ve relied on it for years.

Make Your Own Ragù (Italian Meat Sauce)

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

1 lb. of penne rigatte pasta
1 lb. of hamburger
1 medium onion, finely chopped
Salt and Black Pepper to taste
1 can of crushed tomatoes
1 can of tomato paste
1 T. minced Garlic
1 t. Basil
1 t. Marjoram
1 t. Oregano

Instructions

  • Bring 4 quart sauce pan 2/3 full of water to boil.
  • Add pasta and cook until al dente 8-12 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, sauté hamburger, onion, and salt and pepper on medium-high heat until done.
  • Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and spices.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer sauce for at least 30 minutes. (You may simmer all day on very low heat and stir constantly. This will improve flavor if you are careful.)
  • Serve over pasta.
